Glow: Living Lights – Jan 26 – May 27, 2013

firefly glowHave you ever wondered what makes a firefly glow? Or how strange sea creatures light up the deepest depths of the ocean? Exploring one of the most incredible, yet least understood, phenomena on the planet, Glow: Living Lights takes visitors on a journey into the world of bioluminescence, a living organism’s ability to produce its own light.  This fascinating special exhibit answers the questions of what bioluminescence is and how it differs from other forms of light.

Featuring eleven sections, or “blocks,” and over a dozen engaging and interactive components, Glow: Living Lights brings visitors up close with some of the most incredible creatures ever seen – from the familiar firefly and glowworm to the alien-looking angler fish and siphonophore, the longest living creature on Earth.  This exciting exhibit is a glowing exploration of nature that includes eye-opening photos and graphics, as well as rare preserved specimens and stunningly accurate models.

Highlights Include:

  • Explore some of the most incredible creatures ever seen on Earth!

  • Encounter alien‐looking animals like viper fish, which dangle a light lure to attract their next meal.

  • Discover never-before-seen films of fascinating bioluminescent creatures.

  • Interact with glowing surfaces and engaging, hands-on displays.

  • View demonstrations  on the interesting techniques and equipment used by scientists to study bioluminescence.

  • Explore the many benefits of the scientific study of bioluminescence, including helping to speed the study of cancer‐fighting drugs.

This beautiful exhibit takes visitors through an illuminating journey of both terrestrial and marine environments to learn why and how so many creatures are lighting up the dark.  Find out “who glows there?” at Glow: Living Lights, on display January 25 – May 27, 2013
