Chesapeake City (Just 11 Miles from Elk Forge)
Picturesque Chesapeake City, located on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal is a perfect destination for a quiet day of leisure away from the bustle of everyday life. It’s also a favorite destination for boaters from the nearby rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. The small city has fine restaurants and shops right on the waterfront, it’s no wonder Travel and Leisure Magazine voted the town “A Top 10 crowd-free getaway close to America’s largest cities.”
Thanks in part to ambitious renovations by the late Allaire DuPont (who once piloted her glider under the bridge that spans the town and canal) and others, time seems to have stopped for this Victorian period town. Walking down Bohemia Avenue or George Street is like walking back in time to an America surging with pioneer spirit on the cusp of the 20th century. Proceed on to the town wharf for water-side seating on an endless parade of huge ocean-going vessels and pleasure yachts of every shape and size as they pass by on their passage between the Chesapeake and Delaware bays.
